The wash house

CHAVANNES WASH

Coal has been used since the 11th century and its extraction in mines will lead to the industrial revolution in the 19th century. Large complexes were built in France at the beginning of the 20th century to ensure the sorting of coal. One of them is located in Montceau-les-Mines (71), this enormous industrial complex covers more than 32 hectares. the main building covers more than 8,000 m2. Its construction dates from 1923 and the ten treatment lines will sort up to 1000 tonnes of coal per hour. This wash house was one of the most productive in Europe. Witness of a recent past and of a pre-nuclear France, these buildings and installations have withstood the onslaught of time and looters as best they can since the final cessation of production in November 1999. It has been classified since the year 2000 in the inventory of historical monuments and obtains the XXth century label. We invite you to discover some escapades and atmospheres of this sleeping giant while waiting for a reconversion.
